Based in Michigan, The Shifa Institute is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization aimed to provide Muslim Americans and other minorities with education, references, and resources for mental health. We aim to take a multifaceted approach including supporting research and a psychological perspective regarding mental health, while also maintaining a spiritual identity and philosophy. Our goal is to encourage the conversation of mental health within our community while breaking down stigmas that many hold against it.

In 2019, Salman Pervez, a master’s student in clinical psychology, founded Spartan Shifa at Michigan State University to create a support network for students interested in Muslim mental health within a cultural context that fostered unity. Inspired by this initiative, Azaan Jamil, a premedical psychology undergraduate, later established Dearborn Shifa at University of Michigan-Dearborn in 2024, aiming to enhance community awareness about Muslim mental health issues from a research oriented and psychological perspective. The two quickly bonded over their shared passion, often collaborating on events and workshops that addressed the importance of mental health support.
Months later, Shayan Faraz entered the picture. With a strong background in business and experience starting a company, he crossed paths with Azaan during a campus event. Recognizing a mutual commitment to mental health advocacy, Shayan shared innovative ideas on how to amplify their impact. Intrigued by his entrepreneurial spirit, Azaan invited Shayan to collaborate with Dearborn Shifa, consequently allowing him to connect with Salman through their mutual friendship.
As the trio brainstormed, they realized their collective strengths could lead to something greater. Together, they founded The Shifa Institute, merging Salman and Azaan's expertise in psychology with Shayan's business acumen. Their mission: to provide mental health resources, wellness, and education to Muslim American communities and culture. With Spartan Shifa and Dearborn Shifa as their foundations, they were ready to make a meaningful difference, fostering understanding and accessibility in mental health care for all. Their friendship, rooted in shared values and complementary skills, became the driving force behind their strive to create the nonprofit to serve and educate the Muslim American and Minority community.
